Paperless Payments, an authorized reseller of PayJunction, announced today that credit card receipts may be dangerous to your health. Thermal credit card receipt paper is coated with the chemical Bisphenol-A or BPA that changes color when exposed to heat, which makes the print appear. In an article written in Science News by Janet Raloff in Oct. 2009, studies have shown BPA is a known carcinogen, as well as having harmful effects on the reproductive, developmental and other systems of the body, causing neurological problems for some.
According to the New York Times on July 17^th ,2011, the FDA made it official BPA can’t be used in baby bottles and children’s drinking cups. Because the chemical can leach out of plastic containers and into food, diet is the most obvious means of human exposure. In another New York Times dated Nov. 2011 article Green: Check Your Receipt It May Be Tainted, Rachel Nuwer, reports that research shows the chemical can be absorbed into human skin in a less familiar way: the handling of receipts. In Aina Hunter’s report on CBS Interactive, July 2010 “BPA Receipts Bombshell”, some cases show the amount of BPA on a given receipt was 1,000 times the levels found in a can of food.
